How to Use the Upwork Fee Calculator
This calculator estimates Upwork service fees for freelancers and marketplace fees for clients. All amounts are in USD. Choose your role, enter an amount, and see what Upwork takes or what you need to pay.
Freelancer Mode
Use this mode when you want to know how much Upwork deducts from your contract earnings and what you keep.
Contract Earnings ($): Enter the total amount the client is paying for the contract.
Service Fee Rate: Select your contracted rate from the dropdown, with rates drawn from Upwork's freelancer service fee documentation:
- 0% (Promotional/Special): Special promotional rate or exempt arrangements such as Upwork Payroll or Any Hire
- 5% (Reduced): Reduced rate, typically for Direct Contracts or select programs
- 10% (Typical): Typical rate for Enterprise clients and established relationships
- 15% (Maximum): Maximum rate in the standard 0–15% range
Direct Contract (5% fee): Check this box if you brought your own client to Upwork through Direct Contracts. This locks the fee at 5%, with details from Upwork's Direct Contracts documentation. Uncheck it to restore the dropdown selection.
Enter your contract earnings to see the service fee deducted and your net take-home.
Example: A $2,000 contract at the 10% typical rate:
- Upwork service fee: 10% of $2,000 = $200
- Your net earnings: $1,800
Formula: fee = earnings × (percentage / 100)
Example with Direct Contract: A $2,000 Direct Contract at the fixed 5% rate:
- Upwork service fee: 5% of $2,000 = $100
- Your net earnings: $1,900
Client Mode
Use this mode when you want to know the marketplace fee Upwork adds on top of your freelancer payment.
Payment to Freelancer ($): Enter the amount you agree to pay the freelancer.
Select how you pay, with rates drawn from Upwork's client marketplace fee documentation:
- Credit Card/PayPal (up to 7.99%): Standard payment method with the full marketplace fee
- US Bank Account (3%): ACH payment from a US checking account with a reduced rate
The fee is added to your payment. Enter your payment to the freelancer to see the marketplace fee and total cost.
Example: A $2,000 payment via Credit Card/PayPal:
- Upwork marketplace fee: 7.99% of $2,000 = $159.8
- Total you pay: $2,159.8
Formula: fee = payment × (percentage / 100), total = payment + fee
Reverse Mode
Use this mode when you have a target net amount and need to work backwards to find the gross amount.
Select your role first:
- Freelancer: Enter the net amount you want to receive
- Client: Enter the amount you want the freelancer to receive
When you select Freelancer, the Service Fee Rate dropdown and Direct Contract checkbox appear. The calculator shows the contract amount to charge.
When you select Client, the Payment Method dropdown appears. The calculator shows the total you need to pay including the marketplace fee.
Freelancer: You want to net exactly $1,800 at 10%:
- Amount to charge client: $1,800 / (1 - 10/100) = $2,000
- Upwork fee: $200
- Your net: $1,800
Formula: chargeAmount = desiredNet / (1 - percentage / 100)
Client: You want a freelancer to receive exactly $2,000 via Credit Card:
- Total you pay: $2,000 × (1 + 7.99/100) = $2,159.8
- Upwork fee: $159.8
- Freelancer receives: $2,000
Formula: totalPayment = desiredAmount × (1 + percentage / 100)

- ACH saves clients nearly 5%: A US Bank Account costs 3% versus up to 7.99% for Credit Card/PayPal
- Freelancer fees are deducted, client fees are added: Freelancers see fees removed from earnings; clients see fees added on top
- Use Reverse mode for precise quoting: When you need an exact net or payment amount, this mode prevents shortfalls
Troubleshooting
Please enter valid numbers
This appears when the input contains non-numeric characters. Enter a valid number without currency symbols or commas.
Earnings must be positive / Payment must be positive / Amount must be positive
All amounts must be greater than zero. Enter a positive number.
Fee percentage must be less than 100%
This appears in Reverse Freelancer mode if the fee percentage is 100% or higher, which would require division by zero.
Rate dropdown is disabled
This happens when the Direct Contract checkbox is checked. Uncheck it to restore the dropdown selection.
Results do not match Upwork's invoice
Rates vary by contract and Upwork occasionally updates pricing. This calculator uses the latest verified rates from Upwork's official support pages. If you see a discrepancy, verify the service fee rate shown in your specific contract matches what you selected.
