How to Use the Freelance Rate Calculator
This calculator helps freelancers and contractors set rates and plan income across seven scenarios: calculate an hourly rate from an annual goal, project annual income from a rate, price a fixed project, convert hourly to day/weekly/monthly rates, and determine how many billable hours are needed to hit a target. Tax calculations use a flat effective rate for estimation only; consult a tax professional for accurate planning.
Calculation Modes
Hourly Rate
Enter your desired annual income, optional business expenses and tax rate, and billable hours per year. The calculator works backwards from your net goal to find the hourly rate you must charge.

- Tax rate is a flat estimate only; real-world brackets, deductions, and self-employment taxes will differ
- Expenses and tax fields are optional and default to zero when left empty
- The project buffer adds a percentage on top of your base estimate to cover scope creep
- Day, Weekly, and Retainer modes are simple hourly multiplications with no tax or expense adjustments
- Annual mode calculates tax after subtracting expenses, matching typical taxable income logic
- Tax rate must be under 100% in Hourly and Billable modes to avoid divide-by-zero
