How to Use the Split Bill Calculator

This calculator handles three bill-splitting scenarios: divide a bill evenly with optional tax and tip, calculate per-person totals with a specific tip percentage, or work backwards from a per-person share to find the total bill.

Calculation Modes

Even Split

Enter the bill amount, number of people, and optionally add tax and tip percentages. The calculator computes the total including tax and tip, then divides by the number of people. Tax and tip are both calculated on the pre-tax bill amount.

Example: $150 bill, 4 people, 8.25% tax, 18% tip

• Total: $189.375
• Each Person Pays: $47.34375

After calculating, an Even Split Breakdown table appears showing Bill Amount, Number of People, Total Amount, and Each Person Pays, plus Tax and Tip rows when you entered values for them.

Example: $80 bill, 3 people, no tax, no tip

After calculating, the same breakdown table appears without Tax and Tip rows.

With Tip

Enter the bill amount, tip percentage, and number of people. The calculator shows the total per person and the tip portion per person.

Example: $200 bill, 20% tip, 5 people

Find Total

Work backwards from a per-person amount and headcount to find the total bill.

Example: $35 per person, 6 people

Precision and Notation Settings

Use the settings bar above the tabs to control how results display:

• Decimal places: Adjust from 0 to 16 decimal places (default is 8)
• Notation: Switch between auto, fixed, exponential, and engineering notation (default is auto)

Splitting Dinner with Tax and Tip

The check is $125, there are 4 of you, tax is 8.5%, and you want to tip 20%:

Reverse-Calculating a Group Bill

Everyone agreed to pay $25 and there are 8 people:

No-Tax, No-Tip Split

A $60 taxi ride split 3 ways:

1. Switch to Even Split
2. Bill Amount: 60, Number of People: 3
3. Leave Tax and Tip empty
4. Each Person Pays: $20

Tips for Accurate Calculations

1. Tax and tip in Even Split are optional: leave either field empty and it is treated as zero
2. Tip is calculated on the pre-tax bill: the tip percentage applies to the original bill amount before tax
3. Even Split shows conditional rows: tax and tip rows only appear in the breakdown when you entered values for them
4. With Tip breaks out gratuity separately: you can see exactly how much tip each person pays
5. Find Total works backwards from a per-person share: multiply the individual amount by the headcount
6. One person is a valid input: entering 1 simply returns the total bill unchanged
7. Enter percentages as whole numbers: type 18 for 18%, not 0.18

Troubleshooting

Required

This appears when a required field is left empty. Enter a value in all required fields before calculating.

Amount must be positive

In Even Split mode, enter a positive bill amount.

Bill amount must be positive

In With Tip mode, enter a positive bill amount.

Amount per person must be positive

In Find Total mode, enter a positive per-person amount.

Number of people must be at least 1

Enter 1 or more people. You cannot split a bill among zero people.

Tax percent cannot be negative

In Even Split mode, tax must be zero or positive. Enter the rate as a positive percentage.

Tip percent cannot be negative

Tip must be zero or positive. Enter the rate as a positive percentage.

The details section renders after a successful calculation with no validation errors. Check that all required fields are filled and valid, then click Calculate.
