How to Use the Tip Calculator
This calculator handles three tipping scenarios: calculate the total bill including tip, split a bill and tip equally among a group, or work backwards from a total to find the original bill before tip.
Calculation Modes
Standard
Enter the bill amount and tip percentage to see the tip amount and total.
Example: $100 bill, 18% tip
- Bill Amount: $100
- Tip Percentage: 18%
- Tip Amount: $18
- Total Amount: $118
After calculating, a Tip Breakdown table appears showing Bill Amount, Tip Percentage, Tip Amount, and Total Amount.
Example: $75 bill, 20% tip
- Bill Amount: $75
- Tip Percentage: 20%
- Tip Amount: $15
- Total Amount: $90
After calculating, the same Tip Breakdown table appears.
Split Bill
Enter the bill, tip percentage, and number of people. The calculator shows what each person pays, including their share of the tip.
Example: $150 bill, 20% tip, 4 people
- Bill Amount: $150
- Tip Percentage: 20%
- Tip Amount: $30
- Number of People: 4
- Total Bill: $180
- Tip Per Person: $7.5
- Total Per Person: $45
After calculating, a Bill Split Breakdown table appears showing Bill Amount, Tip Percentage, Tip Amount, Number of People, Total Bill, Tip Per Person, and Total Per Person.
Example: $80 bill, 15% tip, 2 people
- Bill Amount: $80
- Tip Percentage: 15%
- Tip Amount: $12
- Number of People: 2
- Total Bill: $92
- Tip Per Person: $6
- Total Per Person: $46
After calculating, the same Bill Split Breakdown table appears.
Find Original
You know the total you paid including tip and the tip percentage. The calculator finds the original bill amount before tip was added.
Example: $118 total, 18% tip
- Total Amount: $118
- Tip Percentage Applied: 18%
- Original Bill: $100
- Tip Amount: $18
After calculating, a Tip Breakdown table appears showing Bill Amount, Tip Percentage, Tip Amount, and Total Amount.
Example: $92 total, 15% tip
- Total Amount: $92
- Tip Percentage Applied: 15%
- Original Bill: $80
- Tip Amount: $12
After calculating, the same Tip Breakdown table appears.

Comparing Tip Percentages

- Change Tip Percentage to 20 → Total Amount: $120

Tips for Accurate Calculations
- Tip is calculated on the pre-tax bill: the percentage applies to the original bill amount
- Find Original works backwards from the total: it divides by (1 + tip% / 100) to find the pre-tip bill
- Split Bill with one person shows the standard breakdown: per-person rows only appear when there are 2 or more people
- Standard mode is for single-payer scenarios: one person pays the whole bill
- Enter percentages as whole numbers: type 18 for 18%, not 0.18
